History
History Intent
We believe that history is vital to help children learn how the world has developed. By the time children leave Penny Bridge we want them to:
- Have an understanding of the past and understand how events have shaped how we live today.
- Know that history is a moment in time and be able to place events chronologically.
- Be inspired by moments from history and be curious about how life has altered.
- Know about their local history, significant figures and key world history events.
We can learn from our past and our history curriculum is designed to help children understand how events across Britain and internationally fit together, and have effected our amazing world over thousands of years. We are preparing children to learn from the past and giving them the skills to evidence their findings. From learning about ancient civilizations, to understanding how Ulverston has grown and changed over the years we want children to believe they understand our history as a species.
Curriculum Drivers
- To develop a strong understanding of our place in the world, and how events in the past have helped to shape the world we live in today.
- To physically explore our local area today, understanding what happened in Ulverston's past and how events from the past effected Ulverston and the surrounding villages.
Enrichment Activities
There will be activities planned for each year including trips to local area: Holker Hall, Ulverston, Greenodd, Leighton Hall and Haverthwaite Trains. In Y5/6 children will experience a trip to London to visit historical landmarks. Our curriculum is also enhanced by using real-life artefacts, and having using the knowledge of visitors to school.
Impact
Children are assessed against our curriculum endpoints through a variety of different methods: small assessment tasks, retrieval practice, low-stake quizzes, classroom responses and teacher judgements.
Leaders monitor teaching and learning through child voice, parental questionnaires as well as book looks and learning walks and using the online app SeeSaw to record evidence of learning. The development of the children in school is also monitored through daily informal conversations.
- Children will develop lifelong learning behaviours such as pride, resilience and team work.
- Our children will be able to understand, appreciate and succeed in modern Britain.
- Our children will develop a lifelong love of learning through our vision and drivers.
- Our children will be responsible global citizens and courageous advocates through the Christian Values we have instilled in them during their time in school.
- All children will leave our school, fully equipped for the next stage in their learning.
